Nigeria Day

Published on 21 April 2009

The atmosphere was alive on Nigeria Day with music, food and colourful traditional clothing. The hearing impaired team hosted a celebration of all things Nigerian for students, parents and staff to enjoy.

Over the weeks leading up to the event three of our year 8 students practised various Nigerian dishes to prepare for the event.

This involved researching Nigerian recipes and cooking methods, and locating local shops where the special ingredients could be found! The students made yam balls, moi moi with ogi, plantain balls and powerful (non alcoholic) ginger beer.

Fortunately for us, on the day one of the student's mums came in early and prepared a feNigeria_Day_0001ast for the event. We all sampled and savoured such tasty things as, yam porridge, fried chicken, jollof rice, fried plantain, puff puff and much, much more…

The day also included wearing traditional head dresses, playing Mancala games (handmade by the students), Nigerian art, quizzes and dancing. Students learned a traditional Anansi story to share with their families. It was signed and read by the students together.

Mostly and crucially it gave our students’ parents an invaluable chance to meet each other, chat, get some communication support and celebrate their child’s achievements together.
