Manchester Academy students learn about world of insurance

We teamed up with ReachOut UK and Zurich for interactive workshop

Manchester Academy students learnt about the world of insurance when they took part in a fun interactive workshop.

Hosted by mentoring charity ReachOut UK and Zurich Insurance in Manchester, the workshop saw the academy’s Year 8 students split into three teams, with each Group given different scenarios to think about and possible claims to solve.

The session was led by Zurich Insurance’s claims handler Sam Hanock, with support from underwriter Zoe Walker, insurance underwriter Matt Walker and Billie-Jo Bench, Admin Assistant.

The Zurich team talked to the students about how insurance works and when claims would be paid out, before turning the tables on their audience, asking them to decide who was at fault and which claims would be successful from a number of different scenarios.

The project is part of Manchester Academy’s commitment to provide an  ‘Education with Character’, helping to develop students’ learning beyond the classroom.

Commenting on the experience, student Zarah Bakari said:

“We learnt a lot about insurance, making claims and how everything works which was really interesting.”

Student Rijja Khan said she enjoyed everything about the workshop.

“I learnt a lot about insurance and the advice given to us was very informative,” she said.

Manchester Academy’s Pastoral Support Worker Mr Moncrieffe said the students got a lot out of the workshop.

“I’m very pleased with our students’ outstanding contribution, they did a fantastic job representing Manchester Academy.”

Davy Cheema, ReachOut Volunteer and Workshop Officer, added:

“I thought the workshop was really informative but in a fun and engaging way. The young people gained an invaluable insight into the world of insurance via a real working environment, which will help to raise their aspirations."
