April is Autism Acceptance month and at Manchester Academy students have been learning about neurodiversity and Autism through assemblies and form time activities.
There are many myths about autism and students have been working not only to learn more about autism, but also to embrace difference and promote inclusion.
Autism means that someone’s brain works a little differently. It is not something that needs to be fixed. Like everyone, Autistic people have many strengths and may need support with different things.
Autistic people may experience differences in social understanding, flexibility of thought, and sensory sensitivities. Some Autistic people may also have strengths such as creativity, deep focus and excellent attention to detail.
Manchester Academy has a dedicated Autism Resource Centre (ARC) that supports young people to achieve their full potential in school.
Mr Harkness, Lead Teacher of the Autism Resource Centre, said:
“At Manchester Academy, being inclusive is one of our MAGIC values. It means being understanding when others are different from us, allowing everyone to be themselves, and showing compassion and empathy.”
He added:
“Fairness doesn’t always mean being treated the same way. Some people need adjustments and changes to their environment in order to succeed.”
