Macmillan Cancer Support is one of the many charities supported by the Academy, and students were privileged to hear from Mr Cunliffe, National Lead Medical Adviser at Macmillan. He spoke openly about the work the charity does, how it supports people affected by cancer, and how Macmillan is increasingly working to educate younger people. Students were encouraged to ask questions and talk openly about cancer, helping to demystify concerns and build understanding around different types of cancer, treatments, and the support available.
At the end of the session, students watched Macmillan’s latest advert, which powerfully shares the journeys of different patients and highlighted the importance of compassion, care and community.
Students also heard from Jack, representing Greater Manchester Cancer Alliance, who delivered an engaging and interactive presentation exploring careers in healthcare. With Year 9 students preparing to move into key decision‑making stages of their education, the session gave valuable insight into the wide range of roles available within the healthcare sector and helped students begin thinking about future pathways.
Finally, Joan and Janet from Can‑Survive UK spoke about their work supporting families and carers affected by cancer. They shared information about where the charity is based and highlighted the importance of cultural understanding and culturally sensitive support, particularly within diverse communities.
The session concluded with a lively question‑and‑answer segment, where students confidently asked thoughtful questions. To close the event, a cheque for £1,000 was presented to support the ongoing work of the charity.
Mr Cunliffe, National Lead Medical Adviser at Macmillan Cancer Support, said:
“An amazing morning at the Academy, where we’ve spoken to an amazing group of Year 9 students. We’ve been able to demystify some of the concerns about cancer and help young people feel comfortable asking questions. It’s been a brilliant morning with your students, and I know the future is bright for them.”
