Manchester Academy is celebrating the success of former student Alishba, who graduated from the Academy last year and is excelling in her apprenticeship with Manchester City Council’s Growth and Development Directorate. Her journey highlights the motivation, ambition and community spirit that define the Academy’s MAGIC values.
Alishba studied at Manchester Academy for five years, completing Y11 before progressing into an apprenticeship in the City Centre Growth and Infrastructure team. She spoke positively about her time at the Academy, where she embraced new subjects, participated in school events and felt fully supported by staff who encouraged her to achieve her potential.
Her apprenticeship journey began when her family received an email from the Academy promoting opportunities with Manchester City Council. National Apprenticeship Week played an important role, helping her understand the value of apprenticeships and inspiring her to apply. The process involved completing an application form, taking part in an interview and participating in a teamwork activity. Alishba impressed the panel and was selected as one of only 15 successful candidates, supported by both her school and her family.
In her current role, Alishba contributes to high profile projects connected to major transport and planning developments across the city. These include Northern Powerhouse Rail, the Bee Network and zero carbon planning. Her responsibilities range from organising agendas and sending meeting invitations to preparing key documents that support her team’s daily work. Alongside her role, she is completing a Level 3 Business Administration qualification, developing skills in leadership, communication, organisation and professionalism.
Alishba has identified a number of benefits to her apprenticeship, including earning a wage while studying, gaining real world experience and receiving strong support from experienced staff. She has also navigated challenges such as balancing work with study and adapting to fixed working routines. Looking ahead, she hopes to secure a permanent role at the Council, explore different teams and continue taking on more responsibility. She also hopes to study at university in the future.
Ms Cahalin, Manager, said: “It has been fantastic to have Alishba join our team. From the start she has shown she is committed and hardworking, and she is continuing to thrive in her role and develop her skills.”
