Celebrating Creativity at The Whitworth

Manchester Academy recently launched the final year of its three-year partnership with the Whitworth, The Mildred Fund and a range of creative partners with a special exhibition showcasing student work from across a number of innovative projects.

The exhibition celebrated identity, community, creativity and the journeys young people take as they grow and develop. Students, staff and members of the local community came together to explore the artwork on display, while Year 10 and Year 11 students proudly guided visitors through the exhibition. Dressed in waistcoats and bow ties, students also helped welcome guests and served refreshments throughout the evening.

The event was a wonderful celebration of student achievement, creativity and collaboration, leaving staff and students with a great sense of pride in both their work and the wider Manchester Academy community.

Mind Strong

Last year, Year 10 students worked with The Mildred Fund, the Whitworth and Without Shape Without Form to explore how art and the practice of Simran can support young people's wellbeing and resilience.

Through drawing, creative experimentation and reflection, students explored themes of self-expression, personal strength and mental wellbeing. Their work culminated in a striking animation, which was showcased as part of the exhibition.

Our Community

A collection of black-and-white portraits celebrated the diverse and vibrant people who make up the Manchester Academy family.

Created by our talented Year 11 photography students, the portraits capture teachers, staff and members of the wider community, highlighting the relationships and connections that help make our school such a special place.

Taking Flight

Taking Flight explored journeys, transitions and post-16 aspirations.

Working within a digital detox environment, students used drawing, illustration, cyanotypes and origami to reflect on how positive choices can lead to resilience, growth and future success. The final piece symbolised their hopes of becoming 'Year 11 Ready' and demonstrated the important role creativity can play in supporting wellbeing during times of change.

Natural Forms

Created through In Our Words, an after-school project delivered in partnership with Odd Arts, Natural Forms explored the beauty and complexity of the natural world through photography.

Students experimented with shape, texture, pattern and detail to produce a distinctive collection of images inspired by nature, demonstrating both technical skill and creative vision.

Looking Ahead

Together, these collections showcased the creativity, curiosity and ambition of Manchester Academy students, providing powerful opportunities for young people to explore their identities, celebrate their communities and imagine their futures.

As we enter the final year of this exciting partnership, we look forward to creating even more opportunities for students to express themselves, develop their confidence and share their voices through the arts.
