Microsoft UK CEO Inspires Manchester Academy Students

We welcomed a very special guest as Darren Hardman, CEO of Microsoft UK, visited the school to meet students and staff, and share his insights on technology, leadership, and personal growth.

With strong family ties to Moss Side and having grown up nearby in Denton, Darren’s visit was a meaningful return to his roots. Accompanied by our Principal Mr Eldon, he toured the Academy, dropping into Year 11 classrooms to speak with students and observe learning in action.

The visit culminated in a dynamic Q&A session with a student panel, where pupils asked Darren a wide range of questions—from his favourite part of the job (meeting people from all walks of life, including the Prime Minister and being involved in President Trump’s UK visit), to his views on the AI revolution and its impact on future employment. Darren encouraged students to see AI as a gateway to opportunity, not a threat, and asked them about their own ambitions and how they currently use AI in their studies.

“I've had an unbelievable afternoon talking to a set of kids who seem inspired by the opportunity of AI and are articulate in its use and see a world where there's opportunity and not challenges,” Darren said. “It's a great testament to the environment that this school is creating and I was very proud to see Making Manchester Magic in action."

He also spoke passionately about the importance of work/life harmony, developing a strong work ethic, and pushing beyond comfort zones to unlock personal growth.

Before leaving, Darren met with a staff panel to discuss how Manchester Academy could harness AI to support teachers in the future.

Principal Mr Eldon expressed his appreciation: “We’re incredibly thankful to Darren for being so generous with his time and offering our pupils a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to speak to one of the most influential tech leaders in the country, if not the world.”
