The Year 10s had to create unique dishes using a range of ingredients provided in the “What’s in the Bag” challenge. The ingredients were: 2 Chicken breasts, 4 slices of pancetta, 200g of mushrooms, a leek, an onion, a lemon, and 6 cloves of garlic, Thyme, Parsley and ingredients from the dry store.
The Manchester Academy team, consisting of Daud Butt, Josh Hitchman, Mwamba Lesa and Iman Achabia quickly sprang into action and their team working skills were apparent from the word go as they quickly allocated each other tasks. The team’s drive and determination soon began to pay off as they swiftly sautéed leeks and potatoes and began to cook the chicken and bacon.
The first dish the Year 10 produced was stuffed chicken wrapped in bacon on a bed of leeks covered in a mushroom sauce. The accompanying dish featured croquettes on a bed of leeks, served with again with mushroom sauce. The competition only lasted an hour and in this short amount of time the Manchester Academy students managed to plate up some fine looking dishes.
A tense period followed while the SCC catering lecturers judged the offerings from four teams. All the teams, from Greater Manchester schools produced excellent looking platters and it took the panel over ten minutes to come to the conclusion that the Manchester Academy team had scooped first prize. Well done, Daud, Josh, Mwamba and Iman!
