Manchester Academy students are celebrating after coming first out of 24 Manchester schools in a debating competition, as well as finishing in the top 25 nationally.
Students from the Moss Side based school topped the regional leader board of the Urban Debate League competition. Participating schools were given an average score for each debate, with the Academy achieving the best average collectively across the competition.
Manchester Academy Year 10 Director Miss Holt, who has run Debate Mate for the past four years said: “This is the first time we have ever been placed so highly nationally and regionally. We also competed against some of the top schools in Manchester, which makes it even more impressive.
“I am incredibly proud of the pupils who have taken part and committed their time each week to improve their debating skills. It’s a pleasure to see how the pupils have developed through the programme, enhancing both their communication skills and confidence. It’s a real honour to work with these pupils and watch them flourish in the wider school community.”
There are 30 pupils from Years 8, 9 and 10 who take part in Manchester Academy’s Debate Mate after-school club every week. Extra-curricular activities form an important part of the Academy’s commitment to provide an Education with Character.
Millie Dyos-Szolkowska, Programme Director, Debate Mate Schools Ltd, said: “Manchester Academy has had a great year on the Debate Mate programme, running weekly Core and Accelerate clubs.
“Over the course of the year, they consistently entered the maximum number of four teams into our national competitions, debating on topics as varied as the housing crisis and United Nations Security Council reform.
“The students at Manchester Academy have excelled both personally and academically, as have all of the 6,000 students who took part in the Debate Mate programme this year. We are very proud of them all!”
