Resistant Materials

This area is delivered as part of a carousel at KS3. Pupils taking part in Resistant Materials will design and make projects using a range of materials (plastics, wood, metal) in a practical workshop.

Some of these projects will involve the production of electronic circuits and use laser cutting machinery. This enables students to continue confidently onto KS4. At the end of KS3 pupils have the opportunity to specialize in:

"You cannot plough a field by turning it over in your mind." [Author Unknown]

These courses lead to a qualification over a two year period. The GCSE course will consist of 60% coursework with a final exam which is worth (40%) of the marks. This subject is highly regarded attracting some of the most able students in the school. In 2008 the department achieved the best ever results at the academy with 78% of the students achieving A – C grades. The BTEC qualification, which is taught on two separate sites will be 100% coursework with no exam. Students following the BTEC Construction course will study Painting and Decorating, Joinery and Brickwork.
