Physical Education
"Winning isn't everything, but wanting to win is." ]Vince Lombardi]
The PE Department at Manchester Academy is made up of an energetic team of teachers who lead learning in lessons with many extra-curricular activities taking place after school hours, ensuring that sporting achievements are plentiful.
The PE department is situated on the ground floor and consists of a multi-use sports hall, dance studio/gymnasium, two excellent football pitches, a 3rd generation astroturf and two multi-use games areas.
The Physical Education department is designed to support, contribute and compliment the aims of the school. We aim to provide an enjoyable, satisfying and balanced programme with opportunities for all pupils to develop physically, socially, emotionally and cognitively.
The curriculum for Key Stage Three (KS3) is designed to meet the needs of our students and to cover a full range of activities from the National Curriculum.

Pupils at Key Stage 4 continue with PE in their core curriculum but they can also choose to take it as an exam subject through BTEC Sport, GCSE PE or GCSE Dance. Pupils doing core PE continue do games, athletics and gymnastic activities with the introduction of volleyball and trampolining. All pupils are encouraged to complete at least one leadership course during their PE lessons such as organising and running sporting festivals for pupils in our feeder primary schools. This helps with the work of our School Sports Co-ordinator.
In GCSE PE, pupils follow the EDEXCEL course, which includes the study of:
- Exercise and Training
- Safety Aspects and Risk Assessment in Sport
- Anatomy and Physiology
- Analysis of Performance.
Pupils must also complete four sports across the National Curriculum and we try to offer as wide a range as possible. This includes activities off site such as rock climbing and swimming.
We offer a wide and extensive extra curricular programme where pupils can take part in activities at lunch time and after school. Although we offer many sports for pupils such as golf, boxing, volleyball, basketball, dance, table tennis and badminton we specialise in sports such as football, netball, rugby, cricket and athletics of which we have many titles.
Pupils are also given the chance to compete against each other in school through our extensive inter-house programme. Regular competitions are held throughout the year in activities such as basketball, football, athletics, netball, table tennis, badminton and volleyball. Pupils respond to these very well and participation rates are very high.
