Mathematics
"Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out." [Robert Collier]
The Mathematics department is committed to:
- ensuring all pupils at Manchester Academy have access to high quality teaching and support in and out of lessons;
- helping all pupils to become numerate citizens;
- ensuring all pupils are pushed to achieve their potential;
- helping our pupils develop skills for life-long learning.
To deliver these aims, we will endeavour to:
- ensure all pupils have the opportunity of taking a qualification in GCSE Mathematics;
- ensure pupils sit exams that are appropriate to the individual and at a time appropriate to the individual;
- offer higher mathematics courses for those pupils wishing to take them
- offer a range of courses post -16;
- make sure all pupils know where they are at and where they need to be within Mathematics;
- use a range of teaching styles incorporating ICT adapted to the learning needs of our pupils.
The key aims of the Mathematics department are to encourage students to develop:
- a positive attitude to Mathematics as an interesting and enjoyable subject in which they can have confidence and achieve success
- an ability to think clearly and logically, and to communicate Mathematical knowledge independently and cooperatively
- an understanding of the interdependence of different branches of Mathematics
- the ability to use Mathematics across the curriculum
- the knowledge, skill and understanding needed to apply a range of Mathematical concepts to situations which may arise in their own lives
- to raise pupils’ attainment, making them confident in their own abilities, and giving the satisfaction of having achieved to all.
- to develop schemes of work, using guidance from the National Curriculum where appropriate, that reflect the needs of our students
- to ensure that all students are given the opportunity to succeed and develop at a fast pace
- to embrace new technology as a means to raising attainment.
- to provide a firm foundation for further study and appreciation of the subject.
"Take calculated risks. That is quite different from being rash." [George S. Patton]
