Health and Social Care
This is an extremely popular option subject for students in Year 10 and 11, which enables them to learn about the sector and how they might gain the skills to work in Health and Social Care jobs.
Many of the students choose to study this subject as a result of taking part in the NHS programme in Year 9, where students visit the local Central Manchester Foundation Trust hospital, taking part in activities such as genetics workshops and a national NHS competition.
Students study the BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate in Health & Social Care over 2 years in KS4 (or over one year in KS5). Students are encouraged to gain work experience placements in their own time in a variety of Health and Social Care environments, but this is to be built into the schemes of work this year.
Students learn a variety of communication skills as well as gaining an understanding of the needs of individuals, which prepares them for a future in a sector, where health care is to become ever more in demand due to the ageing population.
