Whitworth Art Gallery – Enterprising Africa Enthusiasts
Wednesday, 14th December, 2011
A group of 13 students have successfully applied to take part in a brand new project with the Whitworth Art Gallery this year. The Gallery challenged our students to work in partnership with them to create some products to sell in their shops.
The students have worked with the Whitworth Gallery team to research artists who will feature in their up and coming exhibition ‘We Face Forward’, due to open in June 2012. The exhibition will showcase work from artists who are currently working in West Africa, and our students have enjoyed reflecting on the historical links as well as the modern day African works currently on display at the Whitworth.
The students will then draw inspiration from these artists to create products to be sold in the Gallery shop whilst the exhibition is on. So far students have come up with an astounding number of creative ideas, and have struggled to finalise a top ten list!
The students have expressed a desire to contribute some of their takings to a charity with African links, and we will be looking for business partners to help us make the products to be sold.
