Court Visit Inspires Potential Lawyers

The excellent partnership with Cobbetts law firm in Manchester enabled students from Manchester Academy to visit Manchester Crown Courts on Wednesday 3rd February.

The 8 students, ranging from Year 8 to Year 10, had previously attended the Meet the Professionals law event at Manchester Academy and had expressed interest in a career in law. As a result, they were given the opportunity to visit Cobbetts law firm and also to attend a court session.

The students grilled the judge about his career, how he had reached his eminent position, and also discovered how he felt about making the difficult sentencing decisions required every day. They witnessed the sentencing of a criminal and got a real insight into the workings of a court.

Upon their return to Cobbetts, the students were given a tour of the firm, learning about different departments and career pathways. They also had the opportunity over a delicious lunch to talk to various lawyers from the neighbouring criminal law firm Tuckers, and were able to see the comparison between commercial and criminal law.

The students are really excited about their return visit to Cobbetts later this month when they will be placed in departments to work with the department teams and then present back what they had learned.
