Making The Right Decision

AS / A2 Levels - An A Level is made up of an AS (Advanced Subsidiary) 1 year course and an A2 which is the second year in the same subject.
BTECs - are vocational courses that prepare you for work or progression to university in specific areas.
BTEC National Diploma - is a 2 year advanced level course equal to 3 A Levels.
BTEC National Certificate - is a 2 year advanced level course equal to 2 A Levels.
BTEC National Award - is 1 A Level equal to 4 GCSE's grade A - C
BTEC First Diploma - is a 1 year intermediate course.
GCSE - 1 year courses normally taken as a re-sit alongside another course, or a GCSE package of courses (but not a complete re-sit programme).

NVQs - (National Vocational Qualification) give a vocational qualification in a specific occupational area. NVQs are offered at levels 1, 2, 3.
Entry Level - courses are pre-vocational courses for students who have completed their secondary education, but have yet to gain the requirements for higher level courses.

AS / A2 Levels
These are traditional academic qualifications that give detailed advanced knowledge of single subjects.
Most students take three or four AS Levels in the first year.
You can study subjects that you enjoy, try something new, or do a combination of both.
They can lead to university or employment.

BTEC National Diplomas

A BTEC National Diploma is equivalent to 3 A Levels and can lead to university or employment. BTEC qualifications are also available at BTEC First Diploma and BTEC National Certificate Level. |

NVQs
National Vocational Qualifications are work - related qualifications for students who want to develop practical skills for a specific career, such as Beauty Therapy, Catering or Business Administrator.
NVQs assess your skills and / or ability to complete a task to a national standard and are recognised and valued by employers.
