Careers

Careers guidance is given during Year 10 in tutorial lessons to help students make their option choices for Years 10 and 11. A meeting is held during Year 9 to explain the option system and to enable parents to discuss with Group Tutors and Heads of Department the choice of courses for their child.

In Years 10 and 11, the Careers teacher and staff from the Connexions Service work closely with the Group Tutors to provide general careers guidance. This is supported by individual interviews with the Connexions Adviser attached to the school, and a series of talks by visiting speakers.

The Academy prides itself on the awareness students are given regarding local industry and commerce. At the end of Year 10, all students following GCSE courses are encouraged to participate in the school's Work Experience Scheme.

One of the aims of the school is to help students move on to the Academy Sixth Form or alternative provision.

The Connexions Service gives advice, help and counselling to students at any time, but especially to Years 9, 10 and 11. Visits to firms, colleges and careers exhibitions are organised and speakers are invited into school to talk to students.

Every Year 11 student is entitled to and is offered a one-to-one careers interview. Guidance is also given on how to apply for a job. Advice can be given to help students make the best impression possible at interviews for employment or college.
