April - June

JUNE - Reading Escapes

Escape with a holiday read, read about imaginary worlds or read about all those fabulous places around the world to visit on a holiday one day!

What's going on at Manchester Academy?

'Readathon' began on the 23rd of June for two weeks to raise money for The Roald Dahl Foundation and CLIC Sargeant.

Students in Years 9 and 10 researched holiday destinations and gave presentations in their English lessons on a favourite place in the world to count towards their GCSE Speaking and Listening coursework.

Geography got on board too!

  • Project work on natural disasters is introduced to promote reading of newspapers and websites. Unfortunately these disasters can often happen in some of the most beautiful places on earth but hopefully not when you're on holiday!
  • 'Geography in the News' became part of lesson starter activities.

MAY - Mind and Body

Reading is not just for the brain - it's for the body too. This month's theme is all about celebrating the links between reading and health and sport.

Having a giggle is good for you so check out a newsletter written by David Brent of 'The Office'.

Got any more?

What's going on at Manchester Academy?

  1. Students read as many different types of texts about heath and sport as they can and get entered into a prize draw for their efforts too - oh yes! And the winner is.

  2. NewsBiscuit editor John O'Farrell  comes to Manchester Academy to teach students the art of humorous review writing - it was a right crack!

APRIL - Read all about it!

Reading is everywhere and it's not just about books: you can read anything, anywhere and anytime.

What's going on at Manchester Academy?

  1. Manchester Academy launches 20 minutes of reading (at least!) during Form Time where students can read anything they like for pleasure.

  2. On the 11th April at 10.50am, all students and all staff will stop whatever they are doing and read for 20 minutes.
