Phase Three

The third part of maths squad took place again on the 26th February 2008. Many of the people from previous visits couldn't come because they were on a trip which delayed us a little.
It was in the original building we had visited for stage one of the project. When we arrived, we had to sign in and meet up with our groups. Last time we went, we had a puzzle to complete at home only if we had wanted to. So Amrat from our school had built a football out of hexagons and pentagons which she had received a prize for. Unfortunately she wasn't in as she went on a different trip but will collect her prize next time.
- The first task was to guess the secret animal. It was a bit
like playing the game, "guess the birthday". We had to take a
number between 1-9. Then add, subtract and multiply. All the
answers ended up the same.
Everyone's letter was D, Country Denmark, animals all ended up being elephants and colours grey. So all answers were grey elephants from Denmark which one of the workers had already figured out!
- The second task was running to the ambassadors to get the
questions, running back to figure the answer then run back to see
if it was right. We only had 20 minutes for this task but not many
groups got past 10 questions.
Bungee jumping was our final challenge. Everyone got excited thinking we would be jumping but it was physics using power ranger figures. First we had to try it with weights. We had to measure how far it went down and draw it on a graph.
We then had to estimate how far the power ranger went down. Then we had to go up on stage and see if the power rangers head drowned or not and was recorded and will be sent to the schools to see how well we done.
- Finally we had to do a review of how it went and what could be
improved. After Manchester Academy had to remain behind to take
pictures and be given a certificate for the effort Amrat had put
into making the paper ball.
The third phase was the hardest and did need a lot more effort putting into it. The next session will be the hardest.
