Buddy Reading

Buddy reading is where students (mentors) read with younger students (buddy readers) during a set of time to help buddy readers with their reading abilities.
- Buddy reading was organised by Miss Bramley one of the English
teachers. It has been going on since last year 2007 and has made a
big difference to buddy readers and their mentors. Buddy readers
are year 7s who have volunteered and their mentors are year 9 and
10s.
This year Miss Bramley is still continuing with her wonderful work and support to buddy readers and mentors and to make things exciting, she has made arrangements for an author to come in Manchester Academy. Alan Gamer books which are set in Manchester have been ordered for the buddy readers so they can go to places where the stories are set.
- Buddy readers' educational attainment will improve and also
they will get to enjoy books more and their confidence of reading
in front of the class will improve and they will get knowledge of
context.
I interviewed one of the mentors involved in buddy reading and she said; "I think it's a great idea that we are doing the buddy reading because it does make a difference to me and it's important to know how to read."
What the mentors in years 9 and 10 get from this is leadership skills, coaching skills, organisation skills etc and also this will be good for their CVs.
- The goal is to motivate students to want to read so they will practice reading independently and become fluent reader. What we must remember is that knowledge is power, and books are full of it, through books students can enrich their mind, they can relax and enjoy some precious leisure moments.
