Rice and Lentils

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 cups rice
  • 1 cup lentils
  • 2 whole red chillies
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 3-4 cloves garlic
  • Salt to taste
 
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric
  • 2 onions sliced
  • 3 tbsp oil
  • 3 tbsp chopped coriander
  • 6-7 cups water

Method for the lentils:

  1. Wash lentils.

  2. Heat oil in large saucepan fry the onion till crisp and brown. Remove.

  3. In same oil, add seeds, leaves, chilli, pepper and cloves.

  4. Add the soaking water of lentils. Allow to come to boil.

  5. Add lentils and allow to boil for 5 min.

  6. Add rice, turmeric, salt and cook in high for 10-12 mins.

  7. Put on simmer.

  8. Garnish with fried onions and chopped coriander.

Method for rice:

  1. Wash rice.

  2. Put the rice in the pot.

  3. Add 6-7 cups of water.

  4. Allow the rice to boil.

  5. Put on simmer until the rice is soft and all the water has evaporated.

After the rice and lentils are done, put the rice on a plate/s and add the lentils on top of the rice. Add a few coriander sprinkles on the top of the lentils then it is ready to be eaten.
