Science Department
The Science department offers a full range of courses allowing students of all abilities to access the curriculum.
The main school has six fully equipped laboratories, with a further two in the sixth form centre. Our aim is to foster an enjoyment of Science so that students find it interesting, exciting, rewarding and worthwhile in its own right.
In KS3 students follow the QCA scheme of work, which builds on the curriculum followed by students during KS2.In KS4 the students have the opportunity to choose for the Science course that best fits their needs.

Students are able to opt for GCSEs in:
- Biology
- Chemistry
- Physics
- Double Science
- Single Science

Students can continue with Science into KS5. Manchester Academy students are currently studying AS Biology and Chemistry. We aim to further develop the range of courses we are offering.
Underpinning all our Science courses is the idea of scientific investigation. This involves students in the core principles of predicting, planning (with fair testing) and analysing results.
These skills are clearly transferable and support all forms of problem solving. Increasing use is made of ICT both in the delivery of lessons with effective use made of interactive whiteboards and by the students themselves. Our students are encouraged to become independent learners.

There are opportunities within the curriculum to discuss and debate issues which have a direct impact on the lives of all people e.g. inherited diseases, genetic modification, cloning, fertility treatment, renewable/non renewable energy sources, impact of smoking, diet and alcohol on health. We wish students to develop into informed and responsible citizens.
The department has links with both Manchester University and MMU. 12 of our key stage 4 students are mentored by undergraduates that our studying for science related degrees or Medicine.
Students attend Manchester University lectures and as part of their key stage 4 Chemistry course visit the analytical laboratories at MMU.
