English Department
The English Department at Manchester Academy is made up of a dynamic team of teachers. The English suite is located on the second floor and has five teaching classrooms that are equipped with the most up to date interactive whiteboard technology which is in line with the National Curriculum orders and in tune with our modern world.
The curriculum for Key Stage Three (KS3) is challenging. Our students are provided with a literary diet of post and pre 1914 prose and drama, multicultural poetry; topics that are diverse and stimulating. Students in Year 7, 8 and 9 study a separate Shakespeare text each year. Our students become familiar with the language of the Elizabethan and Jacobean periods over time.
Our Key Stage Three (KS3) results this year improved which indicates that we are making good progress with our students at this fundamental Key Stage.

Key Stage Four (KS4) students in year ten are being offered a revolutionary GCSE for English Language, English Literature and also English Studies. This course enables students' strengths to be exploited so that they can obtain a GCSE that reflects their ability. This course unlike other courses does not favour academic students over those defined as being less so. Our students are stimulated and excited by some of the options for study that are on offer.
KS4 results 2004 were inline with school targets and far exceed the results of the previous year.
At Key Stage 5 (KS5), the department follows the AQA B syllabus for combined language and literature. Students study a range of fiction and non-fiction texts and conduct independent research into the use of language, for this challenging and rewarding course. Assessment is carried out by means of exams and coursework portfolios for both AS and A2.
