Year 9 Maths Squad

On Tuesday, 13th November, 2007 Manchester Academy was only one of four schools [out of 50 other schools] chosen to take part in a number of Maths related activities at Manchester University.
As soon as we got there, we were put into 15 different groups. When we got to our tables we had to fill out a form about who we were, what school we came from and if would be willing to come to University after the age of 18.

They also explained how Maths is not just about equations, but it can also be about having fun just like other subjects, while we were there to try to understand Maths.
The first task was to get to know people in our teams. We were then given a sheet which had 8 mathematical questions on and we had to complete it as a group, in 8 minutes!
After the equations had been completed, the student ambassadors handed out a puzzle for us to solve. It was called "guess who put the dead mouse on the desk" - where we had to guess who it was.
There were lots of other puzzles to solve throughout the day.

The final task was a Maths trail. One person from each team had to run to their team ambassador and get a question one at a time. We had to complete that task in 10 minutes.
This was pretty hard but really fun. Then just before we went, they had a prize draw to do for the fastest and hard working teams for each activity.

We arrived back at school around 3.15 pm tired but very happy. We all agreed that this was the most exciting event that had ever happened in Maths and that the staff were very hard working and did their best to make this a fun event. I hope we can have more days out like this.
