There were two children, a boy and a girl, both born late September 1988. Both were born into loving families. Both wanted. Both loved. Both with innate ability. Both happy and healthy for the early part of their lives. There the similarity ends.

The boy continued with his comfortable life. Secure and safe, happy and healthy. The girl lived through a Genocide, she witnessed terrible things, was rescued and arrived at the Academy.

Like the boy she studied for her GCSEs but in a different language from her own. Like the boy she did coursework, but she had to cram in information he had been studying for 8 years. Like the boy she sat the same GCSEs and her papers marked with exactly the same rigour - no excuses, no favours.

Is this fair? Probably not, but life is not.

Our core function is Teaching and the Curriculum is what we teach. It is what we do and how we do it in every lesson, in every room, hall or field, everyday - which will make this young woman's future more secure.

It is the reason for every Plan, every Audit, every Data Collection, every Meeting and for us to do them all to the best of our ability. We cannot rebuild children's past, but we can make a difference to their futures.
