Year 9 Debate Mate

Published on 24 April 2017

On Thursday, 20th April, ten Year 9 pupils went to the Royal Institute in London to take part in Debate Mate's ‘Big Debate’ in partnership with Comic Relief.

They were there to watch a show debate between two of the leading teams from London and listen to the renowned Bill Gates speak about his life and career. The students then took part in a Q & A session with Bill Gates and other celebrities who were at the event.

Manchester Academy pupils were selected to interview the celebrities for a video of the event.

Afterwards, we visited the local attractions and had a wonderful time in London.

On Friday, 21st April, the Debate Mate Cup took place at the University of Manchester. 25 pupils from Year 7 – Year 9 took part in three debates during the day and were successful in winning a few of these.

Ahmed Amir went on to win ‘best floor question of the day’ and Sultan Suldan won ‘most improved debater’. They made Mrs Sealy and Miss Holt very proud.
