Reach for the Future Students Learn the Secrets of Success

Published on 16 February 2017

The Year 7, 8 and 9 learners who have progressed through the ‘Reach for the Future’ programme had an opportunity to develop some of the softer skills on the last of their 5 sessions.

The students got to take part in an employer networking event with local employers which highlighted Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) job opportunities and skills.

In the activity facilitated by Career Connect’s Kate Hyett, the pupils networked with Phil Hardy (Association of Project Management); Dominic Ryder (NCC Group); Christian Michaels (Digital Marketing) and Nuala Morris (Lighting for Health).

The pupils heard about each contributor’s career journey and the importance of developing the right skills and attributes, along with finding a role which suits their personality. The importance of local labour market opportunities was stressed with growing potential opportunities in the STEM sector.

The learners also found out about specific opportunities in cyber security, structural engineering, digital marketing and manufacturing scientific instruments. Furthermore, the pupils discussed their current career aspirations with the employers and were able to get individual advice, suggestions and also understand just why STEM skills are relevant to over 70% of all jobs.

Speaking to the employers brought home the importance of the past five ‘Reach for the Future’ sessions to the Manchester Academy students; the importance of developing resilience in work, study and succeeding in the all-important STEM subjects.
